Default Any reason to start off as necromancer?

I have been hearing that starting off as a necromancer for the main class isn't a good idea because the only special ability they get is "soul reaping". Is there any reason to be a necromancer? Why not just pick them as a secondary class since the only missing ability is soul reaping?

I assume you're talking about PvE here, in which I really dont understand your question... :\

Soul Reaping is the best energy engine in this game, and you dont even need to devote a single skill to it! why on earth would you want to give that up?!?!?!

Anyone who told you Soul Reaping sucks needs to learn how to kill stuff, honestly.

Soul Reaping is the second most broken form of energy management, following Leadership. When something within a certain range dies, you gain energy equal to the amount of Soul Reaping you have. However it is limited by the fact that it can only trigger 3 times every 15 seconds, but that's still fantastic.

Necros are great in Hard Mode, where enemies have increased attack speed, using Spiteful Spirit, Enfeebling Blood and the like. Using Soul Reaping, you can essentially play any caster class with insane energy management.

Despite the complainers about how useless Soul Reaping is now that it only triggers 3 times in 15 seconds, it still means that most Necros will never run out of Energy during battles. Gives them a huge advantage. They're also quite fun, once you get used to having undead minions (who tend to attack anything that even slightly brushes your aggro bubble) or spreading Curses around.

Necros are really fun to play and IMO verging on god-like once things start dying.

Eh you can't compare a single attribute to a skill that requires a high investment in the attribute as well as taking up your elite slot and a couple others depending on how high you want energy return to be from enchants.

necros = awesamsauce

the strangest thing about playing them is switching to another proffession. I still cant see how eles/monks/dervs manage with no soul reaping.

Yes, that is the one problem I could see with playing a Necromancer, getting spoilt by Soul Reaping. Having to concentrate on your energy sure makes for interesting fights though, even if it is annoying to do sometimes.

Necromancers are fun, but easily spoilt. Don't let one run away with your storage money, they spend it and spend it like there's no tomorrow. The various farming builds help to make up for it though, which is good.

Soul Reaping lovely, particularly if you can use Signet of Lost Souls. You know, just incase things aren't dying quickly enough.

Don't start off as Necromancer if you want to learn how to manage energy. If you don't care....crack on!

Well....after laughing myself outta my chair (not literally) I would have to say that you have been misinformed about the usefulness of soul reaping...aside from the fact that Goths are just plain hot....necros are walking masters of death. They are even more fun to play once you know what you're doing.

Soul Reaping is really that good? Will it be enough to support a Necromancer/Mesmer? I'm considering to go mesmer as my second class.

Uhm, let's see here. You're comparing the Fast Casting and the Soul Reaping primary attribute for PvE use?

Your comparing a class which can cast faster but has to devote 2 or 3 skills to managing energy to a class which is relatively similar in hexing capability with nearly unlimited energy management without any extra costs?

Mesmers are great in their own field of degen hexing, interruptign and generally screwing up enemies skills.

Necros are damage dealing/party support/enhancement fun class in PvE.

The difference is if you want to shut down key foes (mesmer) so that they cant do anything.

Or if you want to kill foes (necro) so that they cant do anything,

They have the most imbalanced energy management in the PvE side of the game. [[enfeebling blood] is sex. Orders + heavy physical party = yum.

With the right build, a Necromancer can also inflict more DPS to a mob than any other class. That is - the Nec will be the one causing the increased dps which is triggered by physical attacks from minions or mele characters.

Try this build created by Moloch Vein to do extremely high mob dps. Be sure to read the linked pvxwiki article on it's usage.

/Sigh...

The DPS comes from the physicals anyway. Without physicals, that build loses DPS.

Physicals don't need that to do high DPS in the first place.

Yes, but that build does an amount of DPS that's much higher than the physicals could do without it. It's way off an another plane.
